Collaborating with Mother Nature
I’ve spent most of my artistic career creating artwork about my relationship with Mother Nature; and in 2016 my work pivoted as I began to explore the possibilities of collaborating with the environment in the creation of my art. I began to create landscape photographs with pinhole cameras and purposefully overexpose the paper negatives inside of them with extremely long exposures such as months or years. Through this process I patiently waited while Mother Nature intervened on the negative through exposure to the weather patterns that naturally occurred during the exposure with rain, snow, and a variety of hot and cold temperatures. The photographs you see in this series are a true collaboration.

PROCESS: I make pinhole cameras and put darkroom photo paper inside as my photographic emulsion. I carefully place each camera within the environment and leave it there to expose for weeks or months. After retrieving the camera the negative is removed from the camera and processed.
MATERIALS: Homemade pinhole cameras, various darkroom photo papers, scanner. Giclee prints on fine art photo paper.
